GOVERNORS

Portfield School is designated as a non-maintained special school. As such, it is ‘owned’ by Autism Wessex (the ‘proprietor’) and the Board of Trustees of the charity has ultimate responsibility for ensuring that the school is managed and run efficiently.

The Governing Body of Portfield School comprises representatives of the trustees, school staff, parents, the local community and others with specific skills and experience to contribute to its work; there is also a local authority representative.

Governors have a vital role in supporting the Board of Trustees. The Governing Body has top-level oversight of the school’s operations and on behalf of the trustees holds the school to account for its standards and performance, supporting but also challenging the school’s leadership and ensuring that the trustees are aware of significant issues. The Head Teacher is responsible for the day-to-day management of the school but governors are closely involved in matters such as its finances, developing the school’s aims and setting appropriate policies to ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction.

The Governing Body normally meets four times a year during term-time. In addition, governors are encouraged to visit the school regularly and to take an interest in a specific area of the school’s operations, such as pupil outcomes, teaching and learning, and leadership and management, and to report on those aspects at Governing Body meetings. The term of office for a governor is four years.
