1. Overview

  1. Pupil premium is additional funding from the Government to help raise the attainment of disadvantaged students of all abilities and to close the gaps between them and their peers.
  2. The pupil premium was introduced in April 2011 and is allocated to schools to work with a range of disadvantaged students including those in receipt of free school meals (FSM) and who have been registered for free school meals at any point in the last six years (known as ‘Ever 6 FSM’).
  3. Schools also receive funding for children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months and children of service personnel.
  4. The Government believes that Head Teacher and School Leaders should decide how to use the pupil premium.

2. Funding

  1. In most cases, the pupil premium is paid direct to schools. Schools decide how to use the funding as they are best placed to assess what additional provision their students need.
  2. For students from low-income families in non-mainstream settings, the local authority decides how to allocate the pupil premium. The authority must consult non-mainstream settings about how the premium for these students should be used.
  3. The school has students from a variety of local authorities, all of whom have different approaches and amounts that they actually payout. This has meant that we have received no pupil premium for some pupils, despite them being entitled. This has been followed up with Local Authorities and from September 2018 we have assurances that 2 of our placing Authorities will pay in full for their pupils placed with us. 

3. Portfield School

  1. Portfield School is a non-maintained special school working with students with Autism and associated difficulties, most typically some form of learning difficulty.  As a result, all of the students within the school are disadvantaged by their disability and Senior Leaders believe a whole-school approach should be taken to the allocation of pupil premium money.
  2. The pupil premium expenditure will be focused to provide resources identified by Teachers, students and key stakeholders which could lead to the closing of any gap in attainment.
  3. Student attainment is benchmarked against national progression frameworks and these figures are published elsewhere on this site.
  4. In the past pupil premium has been used to buy iPads for students to aid communication and learning.  It has also been used to help fund an immersive technology suite.
In 2018-19 
We plan to use pupil premium to invest in:
A whole-school reading for pleasure programme in the spring term
Equine Therapy for eligible primary aged pupils
Sensory Equipment including specialist seating to aid engagement and concentration
Individual equipment purchases for some pupils such as fidget bags and sensory kits
